Spedan has asked me to marry him and I have said I will but of course I want your and Daddy’s consent. He has his people’s. I wish he weren’t so rich but no doubt I shall get used to it! Of course it’s a risk – considering that we’ve both got tempers but he does care very much, and I wouldn’t have him if I didn’t think I could make him happy. We’re awfully good companions. … He has been under great strain recently and he has behaved so awfully well that I feel I can trust him. I never meant to marry and feel I’d have been very happy unmarried but that’s no reason why I shouldn’t be happy married. It does look silly to marry one’s employer but it can’t be helped.

I am no good at saying the proper sentimental things, but I do hope to make him happy – so do like him. Luckily he has a more sensible name than Spedan, namely John.
